Murali's
doosra-fate to be known shortly
The
legality of Muttiah Muralitharans 'doosra' will be known shortly
following extensive tests carried out on the Lankan off spinner
by Professor Bruce Elliot at the University of Western Australia,
Perth in the last few days.
The
Chief Executive of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Duleep Mendis confirmed
that the tests which started on Muralitharan on Thursday continued
for a few more days. He also stated that he expects the report from
the professor very shortly.
Muttiah
Muralitharan who was reported by match referee Chris Broad on the
last day of the third and final test was strapped with reflective
markers and watched by 12 high speed cameras that were capable of
shooting 250 frames per second as he bowled his doosra. The reflective
markers on Murali are captured by the cameras and computers which
will then calculate and give the answer. An ICC approved human movement
specialist Proffessor Elliott believes that the latest state of
the art technology that is used would deliver a correct and clear
cut analysis of the doosra.
In
a nutshell what the sophisticated tests at the Western Australian
University will reveal is whether Muralitharan straightens his arm
while he delivers the doosra. In straightening the arm the level
of tolerance permitted for spinners is a maximum of five degrees.
If
Muralitharans straightening of the arm is within the tolerance
level of five degrees, Muralitharan and his doosra will get the
green light. However if the straightening of the arm exceeds five
degrees, Muralitharan will have to undergo remedial action with
the doosra or drop the delivery from his armoury.
The
Western Australian professor was quoted saying that Muralitharan
fervently believed his doosra was legitimate."His comments
is that he uses far more wrist in his top-spin delivery to to create
his doosra. We will see if there is any truth in that. He has such
rotational ability with his wrist, his strange elbow and in his
shoulder that is quite possible that it is an optical illusion".
