Anuruddha
in fresh bid to enter Parliament
By Harinda Vidanage
General Anuruddha Ratwatte who failed to gain a place in the UPFA
National List to enter Parliament has made a fresh attempt to re-enter
Parliament this week by making a request from President Chandrika
Kumaratunga to accommodate him on the National List.
The
request has been made amidst reports that President Kumaratunga
was planning to include a lawyer on the National List to Parliament
in view of the proposed constitutional amendments that were planned
to be introduced. She has short listed constitutional lawyer Jayampathi
Wickramaratne and Mr. Wijedasa Rajapakse.
Sources
close to President Kumaratunga told The Sunday Times that she was
planning to take in a top lawyer to assist the Freedom Alliance
in implementing a constitutional amendment. One of the two lawyers
will be taken in through the National List after resignation of
list member E.A.D.C. Weerasekera and will be appointed as deputy
minister of constitutional affairs.
Presidential
Media Director Janadasa Peiris who entered Parliament through the
National List has resigned enabling the appointment of former Prime
Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake to Parliament.
Ms.
Mary Lucida is to resign and pave the way for her husband Mervyn
Silva who had earlier been promised a seat by President Kumaratunga.
Acceeding to the request of Mr. Ratwatte would cause problems in
appointing a deputy minister for the subject of constitutional affairs.
Also the appointment of Mr. Ratwatte would would go beyond the limit
of 35 members who could be appointed to the Cabinet.
Under
the JVP - SLFP MoU the Cabinet should be limited to 35 members.
Meanwhile Mr. Janadasa Peiris who resigned as MP was appointed chairman
of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon while Mr. M.M Zuhair, another
National List member who has not been appointed to Parliament is
to be appointed Chairman of the Rupavahini Corporation replacing
Mr. Harim Peiris. |
