Wayamba
poll quiet and low
By Nalaka Nonis and Pushpakumara Jayaratna
Lack of enthusiasm among voters and heavy rains in parts of the
Kurunegala district led to a low turnout at the Wayamba Provincial
Council election yesterday.
Only
around 55 percent of the voters turned up in the province compared
to 73 percent in the general elections on April 2.
The
poll was largely peaceful and fair, but a tragedy occurred when
a police officer providing security to the transport of the ballot
boxes from one of the booths in the Kurunegala district was killed
when the vehicle he was travelling in skidded off the road.
Three
others were injured in the incident which took place at Wariyapola.
The ballot box was recovered and brought to the Kurunegala Kachcheri.
Residents and political observers said two elections within a month
appeared to be too much for the voters, who in addition were disappointed
over what was happening after the April 2 general election.
Wayamba
Returning Officer Jayantha Bulumulla told The Sunday Times that
minor incidents of violence were reported from Wariyapola and Karagaswawe
and she referred the cases to the police.
Heavy
rains which came down around 2.45 p.m. in parts of the Kurunegala
areas also resulted in a delay in transporting ballot boxes to the
Kachcheri. |
