SLFP
to get new party headquarters
By Harinda Vidanage
All SLFP MPs will be requested to donate a percentage of their salaries
to a building fund inaugurated by Ports and Civil Aviation Minister
Mangala Samaraweera to enable the building of a new party office
on a land which had been acquired at the time he was the Urban Development
Minister. The multi-million rupee head office adjoining the Parliamentary
complex in Kotte to be constructed with funds collected from MPs
and other fund raising programmes would be part of a major project
drawn up to prevent the SLFP from being eclipsed by the JVP, party
sources said.
This
fund will then be enhanced by a fund-raiser in the form of a cocktail
party next month at which the invitees will be mainly from the Sri
Lankan business community and would be followed by a lottery.
The
blue prints for the party headquarters have already been completed.
According to party sources this is one of the first steps by the
SLFP towards revamping the party following serious allegations by
a section of the SLFP that the Alliance with the JVP would in the
long run weaken the SLFP at the grass roots level.
Mr.
Samaraweera has been among those who had been criticised for allowing
the JVP to swallow the SLFP, but Mr. Samaraweera has countered these
allegations by saying that if the SLFP had not joined the JVP the
SLFP would never have been in a position to win the general elections.
Public lectures on the SLFP is also part of the proposals targeted
to boost the image of the SLFP. |
