CWC
to stage token strike over Kandapola killings
The Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) yesterday called for a token strike
tomorrow in the tea plantations after cancelling its May Day rally
at Bandarawela to protest the deaths of two workers in police shooting
in Kandapola on Wednesday.
The
strike in the estate sector was announced as tension continued in
the area where the funerals of the two youths took place yesterday
without any further incidents.
More
than 3,000 policemen and soldiers were moved into the area to provide
extra security and the curfew was lifted. The violence erupted on
Wednesday after a road accident involving a private bus and a three-wheeler
on Wednesday morning. That night, mobs reportedly attacked about
15 houses and shops, while two people were killed when police moved
in and opened fire to quell the violence.
The
two youths killed were identified as Weerasamy Jeyarajan and Alagan
Wimalanathan. Estate Infrastructure Minister C. B. Ratnayake assured
that besides the normal compensation, his ministry would give an
extra Rs. 100,000 each to the families of the two victims.
CWC
spokesman Mutthu Sivalingam said they assembled for the May Day
rally in Bandarawela town yesterday but told the crowd to disperse
and observe a day of mourning. He said tomorrow's token strike would
be in support of demands for an impartial inquiry to arrest those
responsible for the deaths of the two youths.
The
Upcountry People's Front went ahead with its May Day rally and meeting
in Pussellawa, but some of its members were due to join the funeral
later in the day. |
