UPFA
in massive May Day show, but views differ
By Nalaka Nonis
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the JVP yesterday gave different
views on calling for support from the public to protect the newly-elected
UPFA government.
Prime
Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe
addressing a massive May Day rally in Town Hall took up different
positions on the duty of the people to protect the government.
The
premier speaking first said people had a duty to safeguard the government,
which they put into office, and in turn the Government was bound
to protect the rights of the people.
He
assured that the rights of the workers would be protected and improved
under the UPFA Government. But Mr. Amarasinghe speaking thereafter
said promises given to the people by the Government should be fulfilled
and if not they had no right to ask people to defend the Government.
He
said a government that did not carry out the people's mandate was
not fit to remain in office and if that happened the JVP would take
people to the streets against it.
Minister
and MEP Leader Dinesh Goonewardena said the Government should act
to abolish harmful labour laws brought forward by the former UNF
Government.
JVP
MP and its Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa said that though
the Norwegian peace envoys were in Sri Lanka, the UPFA would honour
its commitment to the people and there would be no secret deals
as done by the previous UNF regime.
He
said that while the UNP was in power the peace bid was handled dangerously
going against the sovereignty of the country. Referring to further
relief measures, he said the fertilizer price would be further reduced
to Rs. 500. |
