Big
boost for Archery Association
The Korean International Cooperation Agency (Koica) distributed
Archery Equipment to the Archery Association of Sri Lanka at the
Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, last
Friday. The Deputy Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Sripathi
Sooriyaratchchi was the Chief Guest.
Speaking
at the Press Conference, Commander H.U.Silva, President of the Archery
Association of Sri Lanka said that we are looking towards the development
of Sports and especially the sport of archery hasn't developed much.
"Four
years back we had very few archers in Sri Lanka, but now the Sport
has developed and we have around 150 archers in the Club. We even
have a club in Mahiyangana. This is a sport that can be practised
by people from 8-80. The Sport of Archery is good for Sri Lankans
as we Sri Lankans are slightly built and this sport unlike Athletics
does not need a good physique. Korea is getting down foreign coaches
free of charge to train our archers. Archery equipment is expensive
and therefore we need this kind of help. We hope to send 1 Archer
(Nimantha Fernando) to the Olympics this year," commented Commander
H.U. Silva.
The
Guest of Honour, Lim Jae-Hong, the Korean Ambassador to Sri Lanka,
said that Korea has gained recognition in Archery and have some
formidable archers at International level.
One
factor needed for Archery to improve is the availability of a proper
Range for Archery and one needs a good Range to practise. The new
equipment was used in a demonstration after the Press Conference. |
