SriLankan
flights grounded as cabin crew strike
The
cabin crew of SriLankan Airlines staged a sudden strike on Friday
disrupting the national carrier's incoming and outgoing flights.
Cabin
crew labour union is demanding to renegotiate the collective agreement
with the airline and have also made complaints against the airline's
head of service delivery.
Union
leaders were locked in talks with the airline's management as we
went to press on Friday.
An
airline spokesperson said the strike was a token one between 12
noon and 12 midnight and that four incoming flights from Europe
and four departures from Colombo were affected, along with some
flights on other routes.
The
aircraft were unable to take off and passengers who had booked in
were accommodated in hotels.
Civil
Aviation Authority officials said that according to safety rules
flights cannot depart unless they have the minimum number of cabin
crew according to the number of seats in the aircraft.
