Artefacts
point to ancient ties with China
By Atula Bandara
Twelfth century porcelain plates and bowls made in China have been
among the artefacts archaeologists have stumbled upon during excavations
of the outer moat of the historic Ruwanveliseya in Anuradhapura.
The
archaeologists found ten porcelain items inside two clay vases that
bore several cracks. Even some of the porcelain items were cracked,
according to officials of the Central Cultural Fund, which funded
the excavation project. Project Director Prof. T. P. Kulatunga said
these items belonged to the 12th or 13th century and were
made in China.
"The
Chinese artefacts may have got there as part of a ritual during
the last stage of renovation work during the Polonnaruwa era,"
Prof. Kulatunga said. The professor called for more research
on the new finds, which could prove that Sri Lanka and China had
trade and friendly relations from time immemorial. |
