Political
thriller over Film Corp.
By Harinda Vidanage
The National Film Corporation is playing a key role
in a political thriller. It was first retained by President Kumaratunga
when the UPFA Cabinet was appointed after the April 2 general elections.
But
the JVP demanded that the NFC be brought under the Cultural Affairs
and National Heritage Ministry given to it. Most reports indicated
the President was ready to do this though she refused to compromise
on the Mahaweli issue. Accordingly, the four JVP ministers, including
the Minister of Cultural Affairs and National Heritage took oaths
on April 29.
But
The Sunday Times now learns that the President is likely to bring
the NFC under the purview of Media Minister Reginald Cooray. JVP
leaders met President Kumaratunga on Thursday for wide-ranging talks
and the NFC matter also was taken up, but the President did not
give a clear answer, party sources said.
Subjects
and institutions assigned to various ministries by the President
have now been sent to the Government Printer for the issue of a
Gazette notification. Government Printer Neville Nanayakkara said
the Gazette notification was ready and they were awaiting corrections
on the pages before the printing. |
