Horse
endurance race at Bentota Beach
The
national body for equestrian sports - the Sri Lanka Equestrian Association
is once again busy organizing yet another first in the equestrian
scene in Sri Lanka. The very first Horse endurance race in Sri Lanka
will commence on the sands of Bentota Beach on May 16 at 3.00 p.m..
The
FEI (world body for equestrian sports) recognized body and the Premadasa
Riding School have already gathered 10 Marwaris, 5 horses and 4
thoroughbred to participate over the 20km courses set out for the
event.
Similar
to rallies, an endurance race in a test of the speed and staying
ability of horse and rider. Unlike a flat race, the positioning
will be determined by the horse and rider that finishes the course
closest to the predetermined time.
5
teams, comprising of 3 riders per team will be participating, with
awards given for participation, individual and team rankings.
This
endurance race is being sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. Ranjith Dahanayake
and plans to be an international experience, with British, Indian,
American and Sri Lankan riders invited to compete. Endurance veterans,
professional commentators and experienced veterinary surgeons in
endurance racing will also be visiting especially to ensure that
the event is run in accordance to international rules and regulations.
Entrance
is free to all spectators.
Such
an event is a stepping stone for Sri Lankans to participate in the
Asian Games in Doha in 2006.
