Army
couple in unique feat
If the Guiness Book of Records had a chapter for such achievements
in the armed forces, this couple would have sure found a place.
Husband and wife, Brigadiers Basil and Mohanti Peiris serve in the
Sri Lanka Army. He is Director Budget and Plans (in addition to
Supply and Transport). She is Director (Legal). This unique distinction
is unmatched in the armed forces.
And
now, Basil has been promoted to the rank of a Major General. Does
that mean Brigadier Mohanti would have to salute him at home too?
asked a friend. Alia also joins others in saying congratulations.
TNA
taps on DMK
Telephone lines between Colombo and Chennai (South India)
have been busy this week. Some senior Tamil National Alliance parliamentarians
were contacting their counterparts in the Dravida Munnetra Kazhakam
(DMK) which had, in alliance with the Congress Party, secured 40
seats in the recent Indian elections. Seems like old ties are being
renewed and new alliances are to be forged.
Spy
boss told to go
Marching orders are out for the controversial head of
the Directorate of Foreign Intelligence (DFI), Senior Superintendent
of Police, Pat Swaris.
The
man who kept tabs on overseas intelligence activity and visits of
Sri Lankan journalists abroad will retire this month. He has served
as the second head of DFI for six years since 1998. The first to
hold such a post was one time Police Chief, Frank de Silva. A new
head for DFI is yet to be named.
Top
Karuna men killed?
Intelligence sources say some of the top men from the
LTTE Karuna faction - Jim Kelly, Thaatha and Rabert among them -
have been executed. This was after the men surrendered and were
taken to the Wanni for interrogation. However, there is no official
confirmation about any action against them.
These
sources believe several top level changes in the LTTE military leadership
in Batticaloa-Amparai would be made by Wanni high command shortly. |
