Tanya and the Tooth Fairy
By Natasha Fernandopulle
On 30th April the Junior School of The British School in Colombo brought to life “Tanya and the Tooth Fairy”. The first set is of a classroom with unruly children. The teacher Miss Pettigrew (Anethra de Silva) cannot control her class. Her main worry is the class inspection, of which she is sure of failing!

Next the siblings Bill and Jill (Joshua Wilkins and Marya Norat) get into a fight. During this fight Jill knocks out Bill’s tooth. And now we are introduced to the tooth fairy, Tanya (Ashia Llorente).

The siblings do not believe in Tanya so she loses her powers. Then the wicked witch (Kimaya de Silva) takes over, cancels all birthdays and gets two burglars (Dylan Bertus and Il Soon Hwang) to steal all birthday presents. Tanya regains her powers and brings the toys to life. With their help the burglars are arrested. However the witch steals Tanya’s magic ring and she loses her powers, again. So she is sent to school as an ordinary child.

This is where Tanya regains her powers and helps the class pass the inspection. Before leaving the class she casts a spell on the class so they will behave nicely. And so the fairy tale ends.

The two narrators Daham Wickremanayake and Amanah Salih managed to describe the atmosphere of the classroom and the naughty siblings, effectively. The chorus performed well and helped the musical aspect of the play.

Some of the noteworthy performances were by Tommy (Isaac Prins), Brian (Ashley Karunarajah), Slimbo (Pranavan Rockwood), Sam (Srinath Devapura) and Doris (Nathaya Nanayakkara).

Two performances stood out due to their exuberance. Those being, the wicked witch and Mr. Hardcastle (Benjamin Aluwihare), the class inspector. The rest of the cast portrayed their characters well. This helped their group effort immensely.

The sets and costumes were colourful. It was clear that all the children had a good time and so did the audience. Specially, when a board was held up, so that they could repeat certain lines.

Ms Naomi Perera, Ms. Lesley Holdsworth and Ms. Diedre Theogarajah were the teachers who guided the children. The music director was Mrs. Dilani Perera. Mrs. Romina Gyi-Wafa and Mr. Mohan Sudusinghe were the dance choreographers. The colourful costumes were done by Mr. Mohan Sudusinghe.
