Concern over JVP student in Mahapola Trust Fund
By Santhush Fernando
Trade Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle has appointed a representative of a student organisation allied to a political party, as a trustee of the Mahapola Trust Fund Board of Management.

Independent student groups have expressed concern over the appointment of Ravindra Mudalige, Convenor of the JVP-affiliated Inter University Student Federation (IUSF) to the Mahapola Trust.

A student group leader from the University of Sri Jayawardenapura told The Sunday Times that many independent students saw the appointment as an unhealthy development. He said the student groups would meet the minister to express their concern and register their protest.

Minister Fernandopulle told The Sunday Times that he made the appointment because Mr. Mudalige represented the largest student group, the IUSF, which has membership in all universities. He said the IUSF Executive Committee met him last Thursday and suggested that Mr. Mudalige be appointed as one of the two of the Trade Minister's nominees to the 8-member Mahapola Board of Management. The term of a member is five years.

The Chief Justice becomes the Chairperson ex-officio. Other members are the Trade Minister, Permanent Secretaries of the Ministries of Education, Higher Education and Trade and two nominees of the Trade Minister.

The Minister told that as the Trust Fund was established for the welfare of university students, their representation was essential on the Board. The Minister said he would appoint Srimani Athulathmudali, wife of Mahapola Trust Fund founder Lalith Athulathmudali as his second nominee.
