Secret
ballot proposals further divide UNP
By Frances Bulathsinghala
A proposal for a secret ballot to elect office bearers of the UNP
has caused another division in the party. Sajith Premadasa vowed
to push for the election of all office bearers by secret ballot,
but a section is opposed to the move.
S.B.
Dissanayake, tipped to be the National Organiser, told the The Sunday
Times yesterday that senior UNP members were against the suggestion
for a secret ballot because it would lead to a permanent split.
He
claimed that at the party meeting on Thursday, Sajith Premadasa
was persuaded by senior party members to 'forget about his idea'.
However Sajith Premadasa told The Sunday Times that he had 90% of
party support for his decision and that he would 'for the good of
the party, fight for his idea', when the Group and Working Committee
meeting are held tomorrow.
"This
is not about getting a new party leadership but is about democracy
within the UNF", Mr. Premadasa said, adding he would, as a
last resort, request to leave out the UNP top-rungers. |
