Desmond
              back after Anwer Ibrahim trial

President's Counsel Desmond Fernando, past president of the International
Bar Association, returned yesterday after observing the hearing
of the appeal filed by Anwer Ibrahim, former Deputy Prime Minister
of Malaysia, in that country's apex court, the Federal Court of
              Malaysia.
             Mr.
Ibrahim was charged in 1998 with committing sodomy in 1992. The
charge was subsequently amended to make it 1993. The victim complained
to the police seven years after the alleged offence was committed
and six days before the trial. The High Court of Malaysia convicted
              him in 2000.
             He
then appealed to the Court of Appeal. The Court of Appeal dismissed
his appeal. The case then went to the Supreme Court which began
              hearings on May 10.
            Representatives
from the International commission of Jurists, the Law Council of
Australia and several human rights and legal rights group were observers
when the case was taken up. |
