New
leaf for growing cannabis
The Government is to promote the cultivation of cannabis or ganja
in 35 to 50 acres of land and medical practitioners will be permitted
to grow about five ganja plants in their gardens for ayurvedic purposes,
according to a proposal by Indigenous Medicine Minister Tissa Karaliyadde.
He
said the proposal was to promote ganja cultivation in a restricted
manner with the aim of using it as an ayurvedic medicine. While
denying reports that the government would fully lift the ban on
ganja cultivation, Mr. Karaliyadde said the plan was to obtain cannabis
without difficulty to prepare various ayurvedic medicines.
He
said that under present procedures, ayurvedic doctors could obtain
ganja only after getting a court order to release some of the seized
stocks and this often took a long time. |
