|   Eliyakanda 
              Hill Climb in June 2004

              One of the most popoular and well known hill climb motor sports 
              event in the south, the Southern Eliyakanda Hill Climb conducted 
              by the Southern Motor Sports Club (SMSC) is scheduled to be held 
              on June 6 (Sunday) at the Eliyakanda, (Browns Hill) Matara.  
             This 
              is also a much looked forward event in the motor sports calender 
              which is conducted according to international competition rules. 
              This event has the honour of being included as one of the five hill 
              climb events by the Sri Lanka Automobile Sports (SLAS) which is 
              the governing body of motor sports in Sri Lanka which came into 
              force only this year. Hence the Eliyakanda Hill Climb is sure to 
              attract the top drivers and riders of Sri Lanka. 
             The 
              event starts from the main gate of the residency of the district 
              secretary at Browns Hill Matara and terminates at the latter’s 
              premises and some tight finishes could be expected in his picturesque 
              and challenging climb. Last year over 100 competitors took part 
              in ths event and the organises are expecting a bigger turnout this 
              year.  
            This 
              year there will 20 events with 16 for motor cars which includes 
              standard, modified, one make and diesel vehicles and four for motor 
              cycles which includes standard and modified bikes.  
             The 
              SMSC is also planning to include an event for formula cars for the 
              first time and they hope to lure the fatsest men and women drivers 
              for this event. With the events being scheduled to start with the 
              aid of the electronic timing equipment, the competitors are given 
              two runs and the fastest of the two runs will be the ultimate winner 
              and prizes will be offered to the first three of each class. Seventy 
              trophies are on offer for grabs which includes the best driver and 
              rider for the day.
