‘Suriya
Arana’ achieves a financial record
Somaratne Dissanayake’s “Suriya Arana” (Fire Fighters)
has become an instant box office hit. In twenty-three theatres it
had a run of over 100 days and hopes to continue the trend when
it is screened in the other 22 outstation theatres around the country
from May 26.
At
the Savoy it had a record collection for any film shown there. It
held the record of collection Rs. 8.6 million for ‘Devadas’.
Suriya Arana brought Rs.11 million for 104 days. The film so far
had collected Rs. 78 million island wide.
Meanwhile
the film also won international recognition when it won the Best
movie Silver Award in the Open World Cinema Section at 37th Houston
International Film Festival. It is scheduled to be screened at several
other foreign festivals including ECO Cinema International Film
Festival in Greece and another two festivals in Japan and China.
Set
in the early 1920s the story depicts a conflict that arises between
a hunter who exerts a harmful influence (killing animal and making
the villagers eat their flesh) on the village and a monk with a
young novice-‘Samanera’ who enters this village. The
film set in the colonial times shows how the monk finally wins the
battle through love and kindness bringing peace to the village.
The
main roles in Suriya Arana are played by Jackson Anthony, Jayalath
Manoratne and child actors, Sajitha Anuththara and Dasun Madushanka.
G. R. Perera, Duleeka Marapana, Nayani Senanayake and child actress,
Pramudi Karunaratne do the other roles. Produced and production
managed by Renuka Balasuriya the film is directed by Somaratne Dissanayake.
