The Nutcracker
By Natasha Fernandopulle
“The Nutcracker”, performed by the Infant Section of the Colombo International School was held on the 10th and 11th of June, at the CIS Auditorium.

The fairy tale is about a little girl named Clara. On her birthday, Clara receives a gift of a magic nutcracker. During the party, Clara falls asleep. She wakes up when the Queen Mouse sends her army of female mice. The fierce Mouse Queen and her army attempt to attack the nutcracker and his army of tin soldiers. But Clara scares the mice away by threatening to set her cat on them.

Next, the nutcracker takes Clara into the land of sweets. Here she meets the Sugar Plum Fairy. She dances for Clara and the Nutcracker Prince, and later tells them how the warm weather is making the sweets melt. Clara makes a few suggestions and travels north, in the land of sweets.

After being entertained by a few dances, namely the Russian, Arabian, Chinese and Rock dance, Clara and the nutcracker decided to get back home.

The choir sings and the waltz of the flowers is performed. Then, Clara wakes up from her dream and she along with her guest continue to dance at her birthday party. And so the story ends.

It was a colourful performance. The singing and dancing were performed well. All the children did their bit to make the performance that much better. Among them, Clara (Suhara Wijewardana), the nutcracker, (Zak Magala) and the Queen Mouse (Minolee Madanayake) deserve a special mention as their performances were something to talk about. “The Nutcracker” was directed by Saroshini de Mel Abeysekera and was choreographed by Thushara Pereira.
