Veddhas
threaten polls boycott
By Palitha Ariyawansa
The Veddha chief has threatened to urge members of his clan to boycott
the forthcoming Provincial Council elections as politicians have
failed to keep their promises.
Veddha
chieftain Uruvarige Vanniyelaeththo claimed his father had tried
to solve problems through politicians while he was alive without
any success. Since he himself took over the leadership after his
father’s death six years ago, none of the promises by politicians
had been fulfilled.
At
least 800 of the 1,950 Veddhas of his clan are eligible to vote.
"We will tell our clan members to either stay at home or go
into the jungle for their own work on election day", he said. |
