JVP
MP in chit admission
By Mahangu Weerasinghe
Despite the strict government policy on preventing political influence
in school admissions, the son of Matara District JVP Parliamentarian
has been admitted to a leading school in the southern province without
the required marks being obtained at the Year-Five scholarship examination.
The
student, son of JVP MP Premasiri Manage, has been admitted to Rahula
Vidyalaya, Matara despite obtaining only 142 marks as against the
required 164 marks to enter the national school.
Rahula
Principal Kithsiri Liyanagamage told The Sunday Times he had received
a letter from the Director of National Schools, ordering him to
admit the politician's son. He acknowledged that admitting the politician's
son meant leaving out a better qualified child.
The
Sunday Times learns that a Matara district UPFA minister had influenced
the Director of National Schools to issue the letter. Meanwhile
the director who issued the letter is said to have not reported
to work for the past few days while the JVP parliamentarian was
not available for comment. |
