Maldivian
exile group calls for multi-party democracy
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), an entity in exile, yesterday
urged Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom to recognize it as
a political party or vowed to fight peacefully to achieve its objective
despite refusal by the Male government to recognise it as a political
party.
MDP
leaders told a news conference at the Hilton Hotel in Colombo that
President Gayoom should show commitment to political pluralism in
the Maldives.
The
group, including three MPs, said it welcomed President Gayoom’s
pledge last month that he would introduce reforms for political
pluralism but also expressed concern that the President in the past
had not carried out his promises. Majlis member Ali Hashim said
that people in the Maldives were just beginning to talk about politics
openly but were in fear of being jailed on charges of going against
the Government. He said four of the six members of the delegation
had been jailed for such action. |
