Mystery posters: Who did them for what?
By Chris Kamalendran
The Government Printer has printed propaganda posters for the UPFA government depicting Jaffna University students backing the LTTE – with a gun to their backs, The Sunday Times learns.

Some 50,000 copies of this poster were reportedly printed under mysterious circumstances and a copy obtained by The Sunday Times shows a Tiger holding a pistol at the back of a person addressing a crowd with the Tamil wordings "All the Tamils are with the LTTE. This shows the unity of the Tamils - a May day message by the leader of the University Students Union". With the Tiger pointing a pistol at the Speaker on the stage a line runs, "You can talk only about us".

The poster is signed by the "Peace loving University Students Movement". It was not immediately clear as to who had given the print order. Government Printer Neville Nanayakkara first told The Sunday Times, he would comment after checking with the staff about it. He later said he had contacted officials at the printing section and they had no knowledge about the posters.

But the posters before being dispatched from the secret documents section at Narahenpita were seen piled up by the staff before being taken away. The Sunday Times learns that the posters had been hurriedly printed at the Government Printers Department on an order placed through a senior official there. The purpose for which the posters were printed was not immediately clear, but they are likely to be used in the Northern and Eastern provinces.
