400
politicians, officials face bribery charges
By Chris Kamalendran
With bribery and corruption rampant, investigations of nearly 400
cases of bribery against politicians, police officers and public
servants among others, have been revived following the filling of
the vacancy of a Commissioner.
Commissioner
Kingsley Wickremasuriya told The Sunday Times that investigations
had been resumed this week after some 18 months and the Commission
would also submit to the Attorney General files of persons connected
in more than 100 cases which it could not proceed with due to the
absence of a Commissioner since February last year.
He
said, among those to be considered for indictment were 18 police
officers, five forest department officials, four Justice Ministry
officials, an Assistant Controller for Explosives in the former
Interior Ministry and an Agrarian Service Assistant Commissioner.
Mr.
Wickremesuriya said that with the reactivation of the commission
they had also started raids. In one of the first raids, two police
officers attached to the Nochchiyagama area were arrested while
allegedly accepting bribes on Friday morning.
Mr.
Wickremasuriya said it would take at least two years to clear the
backlog caused by the absence of a Commissioner. The Sunday Times
learns that more than 1200 complaints were pending at the Commission
while no new investigations were launched during the past one and
a half years. |
