Careless
motorists beware!
Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva plans to generate more revenue
for the National Hospital system while also mapping out a strategy
to reduce the number of accidents in the country.
The
minister plans to introduce a scheme where offending drivers would
have to pay for the hospital bills of persons injured in vehicle
accidents and treated at state-run hospitals. Minister De Silva
told The Sunday Times that the planned law was to be put forward
as an amendment to the Motor Traffic Act.
"Under
the law, if a driver is found guilty of careless driving, he will
be forced to pay for the hospitalisation charges of those injured,"
he said. This would be in addition to the fine imposed by the courts.
A press release from the Ministry said the scheme was being formulated
to help reduce the number of accidents taking place in the country. |
