President
goes to Press Complaints Commission
President Chandrika Kumaratunga has taken a complaint against The
Sunday Times to the Press Complaints Commission, the self-regulatory
body functioning under the newspaper industry.
The
complaint lodged this week by her Media Director Eric Fernando states
that the political column and a satire column by Ryp Van Winkle
in the newspaper have infringed on Privacy clauses contained in
the Code of Practice of The Editors Guild of Sri Lanka. According
to the complaint communicated to The Sunday Times, the offending
references are connected to President Kumaratunga's recent visit
to Britain, which the newspaper's Political Editor and satirist
have commented upon.
The
Press Complaints Commission (PCC) is the implementing arm of the
Code and functions under the Arbitration Laws of the country. President
Kumaratunga's Media Director has asked that the matter be resolved
by way of conciliation.
The
Sunday Times has stated that it supports the work of the PCC, and
will be co-operating in the inquiry being conducted by the Commission.
A fortnight ago, Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera's proposal to
reinvigorate the defunct Government appointed Press Council was
shot down by his Ministerial colleagues, and he withdrew his proposal
thereafter.
Mr.
Samaraweera told the Cabinet that the self-regulatory PCC had not
received any complaints since its inception and that there was therefore
a need to reactivate the Press Council.
However,
CEO Ms. Manique Mendis told The Sunday Times a fortnight ago, that
the Commission had received 180 communications since it started
in October 2003, and 90 per cent of them were settled amicably by
the parties. |
