JVP
says no talks on LTTE ISGA proposals
By Frances Bulathsinghala
The JVP is claiming that it has obtained an assurance from the government
that it would not go ahead with discussions based on the LTTE's
Interim Self-Governing Authority proposals. "We have got an
assurance from the government that it will not consider the LTTE's
ISGA proposals, " JVP Minister Anura Dissanayake told The Sunday
Times.
He
said if the UNF was in office, Eelam would have been already declared
in the North East by now. The JVP was satisfied that the government
was trying to prevent the LTTE from establishing a separate state,
he said. Mr. Dissanayake, however, said though the setting up of
a separate state was thwarted, the government appeared to be helpless
and ineffective in preventing a series of killings by the LTTE.
"The
Government has clearly been inefficient in this regard. We admit
it," the JVP Minister said. His comments came after Government
Spokesman and Minister Mangala Samaraweera said the government was
finding it a 'strain' to continue with the peace process in the
face of the LTTE's political killings.
Mr.
Dissanayake said that instead of curbing the killings, the government
was trying to pacify the killers by providing duty-free vehicles
to the LTTE."No, we do not agree with the Government in its
decision to exempt tax duties on the LTTE vehicles", Mr. Dissanayake
said. |
