Duty leave refused to Basnayake Nilame
A local company with foreign collaboration has refused duty leave to a Sri Lankan to take part in a national event - to perform his role as the Basnayake Nilame of the Lankathileke Esala Perahera next week.

Hutchison Telecom has refused duty leave to one of its employees, Basnayake Nilame Rajitha Ratwatte, but granted no pay leave for him to participate at the perahera.

The ruling had come despite a communication from the Deputy Commissioner of Labour requesting duty leave be granted as the practice in the government sector to grant such leave for those who conduct matters of national importance, cultural or otherwise.

The company says Mr. Ratwatte has exhausted all his leave for the year, but the employee Basnanayake Nilame contends that the leave he had taken had been for the Kandy Esala Perahera and the exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic, both national events.
