Sri Lanka had an inauspicious start to their "Gold
quest" when rifle shooter Pushpamali Ramanayake was placed
38th out of 44 competitors in the women's 10m Air Rifle event.
In
this event China's Du Li became the first to win a 'gold'. However
in the first round Ramanayake collected 386 points while ultimate
winner Li ( 398) and Russia's Galkina Lioubov had (399) points.
Thirty
seven year-old Ramanayake who previously took part in the Barcelona
and Atlanta Olympics is scheduled to take in the women's 50 rifle
3 positions event on the 20th. The track and field events of the
games are scheduled to take off on Wednesday.
Here
Manjula Kumara ( high Jump), Rohan Pradeep Kumara (400m men's) will
be on show on the 20th while Damayanthi Dharsha ( women's 400m)
will take part in her event on the 21st.

Indrajith Sri Lanka's marathon runner will 'hit the road' on the
29th while swimmer Menaka de Silva will take the plunge on the 20th.
However Sri Lanka’s team leader Susanthika Jayasinghe who
qualified only for the 100 women’s event has declined a request
made by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse to reconsider her stance
