An interview with a child star
N. Dilshath Banu has a chat with Nithyawani, Kandasamy, who acted in Saroja and Punchi Suranganawi.
Nithyawani Kandasamy was born on 24th November 1992 in Colombo. She has achieved life time awards in the films directed by Somaratne Dissanayake. She received the award for the ‘Best performance’ in the Iranian Film Festival in 2000 for ‘Saroja’ and in 2002 for ‘Punchi Suranganawi’. She is studying in Grade 7 in Ramanathan Hindu Ladies, Colombo-4. Nithyawani has a younger brother named, Niruban. Nithya and her family live in Moratuwa.

Q: - How did you start to act?
A: - Firstly, Somaratne Uncle and Renuka Aunty came to my school, in search of school children, to act in their film, ‘Saroja’. From every school, they selected ten girls. I was among those who were selected. Then he told me to come to Lumbini School for the interview. When I went there, I saw about one thousand five hundred children, gathered there. First they chose hundred and after that five children. I was among the five. Finally, I had to act a role. I did well. And they selected me. That’s how I started acting.

Q: - Did somebody help you during acting?
A:
- Lot of people helped me out, but most of all, my mother Mrs. Shanthi Kandasamy.

Q: - You have acted in two films. Could you please tell me your experience in acting in those two films?
A:
- I was very happy about acting. When I was acting in ‘Saroja’, we were in the jungle. But in ‘Punchi Suranganawi’, it was a different role.

Q: - You are also doing a TV programme named ‘Kutti Chutti’. How do you manage your time to study and participate in that programme?
A:
- ‘ Kutti Chutti’ is on every Saturdays 8 – 10 am. So it doesn’t clash with my school timetable. And I only have a math class at 6 ‘o’ clock in the evening on Saturdays.

Q: - What are your hobbies?
A:
- Collecting stamps. I love to read storybooks a lot. And I like to dance too.

Q: - Do you have a pet at home?
A:
- I don’t have any pets, but I have a lot of toys. I have lots of teddy bears, Barbie dolls and dancing dolls and many other toys. My brother also plays with them.

Q: - Do you want to continue acting when you grow up?
A:
- No. Acting is my part-time work. I want to be a dancing teacher and an engineer, when I grow up.

Q: - Are you planning to act in more films?
A:
- Not in any more films, but sometimes I may act in a teledrama.
