a model in reproductive health
Sri Lanka shines as a model in reproductive health, a UN official
said. Addressing the 37th Annual Academic Session of the Sri Lankan
College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (SLCOG) under the theme
"Achieving Excellence in Reproductive Health" UNICEF Representative
Ted Chaiban, said Sri Lanka was considered as a model, as it ranks
high in reproductive health and had performed well to reduce maternal
mortality rate (per 100,000 of the population) from 1,600 in the
1940s to 58 in 2003.
Chief
Guest Prof. S. Arulkumaran , Head of the Department of Obstetrics
and Gynaecology, St. George's Hospital, London said Sri Lanka had
an excellent track record of maternal health due to the progressive
social development policies of successive government and the contribution
of medical and health workers.
SLOGC
President Dr. Marlene Abeywardene delivering the keynote address
said that poverty, over-population, lack of funds and facilities
were the main obstacles faced by those in the foetal medicine.
She
told the session which was held at the Continental Hotel in Colombo
that the "Safe Motherhood Programme" undertaken by the
SLCOG with the collaboration of UNICEF had been successful in creating
public awareness among women. |
