Lanka
condemns Russian massacre as despicable
Sri Lanka yesterday strongly condemned the Russian school massacre
as a dastardly act of terrorism. Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar
in a letter to his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, said that
while condemning unreservedly these despicable acts of terrorism,
Sri Lanka as a country subjected to similar threats of terrorism
joined the international community in taking strong collective measures
to overcome the global threat of terrorism.
Mr.
Kadirgamar conveyed Sri Lanka's profound sympathy to those affected
by the terrorist act. More than 322 children and adults died and
many others among the 1,000 hostages were wounded when Russian crack
troops stormed the school after unexplained explosions inside the
school and the militants apparently began to shoot hostages.
World
leaders, including US President George W. Bush, British Prime Minister
Tony Blair and President Musharraf of Pakistan, voiced revulsion
and outrage over the bloody end to the Russian hostage crisis, calling
it a tragedy which resulted from "depraved" and "evil"
terrorist acts. |
