Visidunu
Studies - a laudable venture
Probe. Expose. Debate. Accept. This was what renowned scholar Munidasa
Cumaratunga believed with regard to anything one learns. Based on
this principle, his grandson Gevindu has launched an interesting
project, 'Visidunu Vimasuma' - in-depth studies of literary activities.
(Visidunu is Gevindu's publishing outfit).
"Mine
is an attempt to encourage scholars to go deep into a subject, gather
knowledge and expose such knowledge so that it will benefit society,"
Gevindu explains. A laudable venture indeed at a time when so many
state sponsored organizations are groping in the dark as to what
should be done to promote literature and other arts.
September
being the Literary Month (whatever that may mean) it is an ideal
time for those involved in promoting literary activities to do something
worthwhile -
In
fact, everyone is looking forward to the annual International Book
Fair organized by the Sri Lanka Book Publishers' Association (it
opens tomorrow at the BMICH) rather than the state sponsored activities.
Gevindu
has selected Munidasa Cumaratunga for the first volume of his 'Vimasuma'
series. "I have been inspired by his sayings and actions. He
maintained that we should probe to get at the truth. He was constantly
probing the Sinhala language, the grammar and the literary works
dating back centuries. He went into the history of the country particularly
to the pre-Vijayan era and shared his views with others," Gevindu
says.
Nanda
Malini show
An open air show has been planned to coincide with the
opening of the annual Book Fair, at the BMICH west wing park featuring
Nanda Malini, Sunil Ariyaratne and Rohana Weerasinghe. Nanda will
sing new creations by Sunil with music being handled by Rohana.
Other
well-known names - Carlo Fonseka, Tissa Abeysekera, Parakrama Kodituwakku
and Jayalath Manoratne - will make short addresses while popular
singer Karunaratne Divulgane will introduce the numbers. Big names
in the dancing field - Channa, Budawatte, Ravibandu and Ariyaratne
Kaluarachchi- are supporting the show. |
