Chaya Sanjeewani on the road to fame
With the ever-increasing number of teledramas many new faces come to the limelight. But the chances of remaining in the field have become hard for all of them. Interested only in surviving as a star many of these artistes opt to do any role offered them. But Chaya Sanjeewani, our cover girl this week and a budding actress says she likes to do roles with which she can make an impact on her audience. She only wishes to act in roles which has quality.

How did you reach your objective of being an actress?
Well, my love for the world of drama and art pushed me to it Radi Wijesekara’s “Gini Kathura” provided the first opportunity. Next step was to act in a teleplay. I reached a wider audience as ‘Preethi’ in “Samartha”, and my first film was in Udayakantha’s ‘Diya Yata Gindara’. So my dream to be an actress evolved almost by itself starting from school plays and reaching the wide screen.

Have you got any roles that has challenged your acting capacity?
That is yet to come, but I think in Sudath Senaratne’s “Sadha Wasanthaya” my role covers a period of 40 years. So it could be a rather challenging task. I think the best is yet to come. At present I don’t have the capacity to be selective.

It will come later with popularity and my skill in acting. What is your concept of your life style as an actress?
Well, it is wonderful. Filming can be enjoyable when we work as a team. Yet there are pitfalls like in any other career. You have to be alert to avoid them if not you are a loser.

Why do you think it is difficult to remain in the acting circle?
Even if you have the ability to act if you don’t get an opportunity to use it, how can you proceed? There are many talented people who are outside just because of the lack of opportunity and right contacts.

What are the unpleasant experiences if any, during this time?
No, definitely not. I think it is the way you go about reaching your objectives that you meet conflicts. So far I have been able to act wisely. My mother is always at my side when we go filming and that too is a help to an upcoming actress I should say.

Your future hopes?
At present I am concentrating on becoming a good actress. My intention is to retain the interest my fans have in me and I hope to work towards that goal getting roles that will make an adequate impact on my fans.

What are the films/ teledramas that you have acted and are awaiting release?
Ranjan Ramanayake’s ‘One Shot’, Wasantha Obesekera’s “Sanda Giri Muduna”, Chandraratne Mapitigama’s “Imaka Pema” are the films that are to be released. And Gihan Rohana’s “Bindunu Piyapath”, Sudath Senaratne’s “Sanda Wasanathaya”, Austin Fonseka’s “Adara Amma” and Nihal Fernando’s “Vill Thera” are a few more in the list. I have been offered roles in some others.

Who helped you in your career?
I remember with deep appreciation and gratitude all who have helped me in this journey specially Mr. Donald Jayantha, director Udayakantha Warnasuriya, Chandraratne Mapitigama, Saman Almeida, Tikiri Ratnayake, Sudath Senaratne, Austin Fonseka and Gihan Rohana.
