Security
for NSB
Former head of the Directorate of Foreign Intelligence (DFI), Pat
Suwaris, has found a new assignment in the state sector.
Defence Secretary Cyril Herath, who is also Chairman of the National
Savings Bank, has hired him as a security consultant to the NSB.
Although some members of the directorate were not in favour of a
security consultant, the majority prevailed.
The
post of Director of the DFI is yet to be filled. Prospective applicants
are now being interviewed. Among contenders was a private sector
personality who served a diplomatic stint in an important capital.
He had excelled in sending intelligence reports from that capital
when he served there as a diplomat.
Sri
Kantha, a Superintendent of Police is now acting as head of DFI,
considered by many in the defence establishment as a white elephant
in view of the poor returns it has provided.
