Proposal
to ban cattle slaughter
By Santhush Fernando
A proposal to ban the slaughter of cattle in the country was handed
over to Speaker W.J.M.Lokubandara by the Jathika Hela Urumaya MP
Ven. Kolonnawe Siri Sumangala Thera last week.
The
move comes after Deputy Speaker Geethanjana Gunawardane said last
week he had requested that beef and pork be removed from the menu
of Parliament meals.
Ven.
Sumangala Thera told The Sunday Times that the JHU was seeking a
day long debate on the issue and said a Bill would be drafted taking
into consideration the views expressed by all MPs.
"Our
main objective is to bring about a total ban on slaughtering of
cattle but we will listen to the views of others," the Thera
said. He said the JHU hopes to promote the use of animal husbandry
to make the country self sufficient in dairy products and also find
new sources of income for the rural masses. The JHU also hopes to
introduce legislation to control gambling and the sale of liquor
shortly. |
