Pay
hike for judges

Parliament last week unanimously voted to rectify
an anomaly in the salaries of the Chief Justice, Judges of the Supreme
Court and of the President and Judges of the Court of Appeal. Parliamentary
approval came under powers vested in it by Article 108 (1) of the
Constitution.
Accordingly
the salary of the Chief Justice will be Rs. 453,900 per annum while
those of the SC judges and President of the Court of Appeal will
be Rs. 403,680 per annum and those of Appeal Court judges Rs. 390,900
per annum with effect from 1.1.2001.
A
non-pensionable monthly allowance of Rs. 15,000 with effect from
1.1.2001 and a rent allowance of Rs. 12,000 per month with effect
from 1.1.2004 were also approved. |
