Lanka
wants Hollywood Buddha film banned
Sri Lanka is to request the United States to ban the upcoming film
Hollywood Buddha which is seen as an insult to Buddhism. Cultural
Affairs and National Heritage Vijitha Herath said he would ask the
Foreign Ministry to take up the matter with the United States government
and seek a ban.
His
outburst came in parliament on Thursday amidst growing protests
by Mahanayake Theras and Buddhist groups after film posters showed
Director Philippe Caland sitting on the head of a Buddha statue.
Thailand had protested against this poster and the director has
apologised.
The
Mahanayake of the Asgiriya and Malwatte chapters have written to
President Chandrika Kumaratunga, requesting the government to take
up the matter with the United States.
The
Jathika Sanga Sammelanayla will hold a demonstration outside the
US embassy in Colombo tomorrow to protest against the film. Yesterday,
the Jathika Bodhu Urumaya held a protest rally outside the embassy. |
