WP retain President's Trophy

Western Province underlined their supremacy at the
30th National Sports Festival concluded at the Vincent Dias Stadium
in Badulla when they retained the President's Trophy for yet another
year with Central Province in second place and North Western Province
in third place.
The
champions won a total of 64 gold medals and 51 silver and bronze
medals with Central Province securing 32 gold medals, 30 silver
and 34 bronze medals while North Western Province collected 19 gold,
25 silver and 19 bronze medals. Fourth placed Southern Province
won 12 gold, 15 silver and 20 bronze medals.
North
Central Province won ten gold medals, 8 silver and 13 bronze medals.
Sabaragamuwa Province also won ten gold medals, 16 silver and 23
bronze medals. Uva Province the hosts won 6 gold medals, 7 silver
medals and 12 bronze medals. North Eastern Province won only one
gold medal, 2 silver medals and 4 bronze medals. Meanwhile the only
record for the day came from Niluka de Silva of North Central Province
in the women's 1500 metres final. She took the gold medal clocking
4 minutes 35.70 seconds while erasing the previous best of 4 minutes
36.05 seconds set by Keshani Samarakoon of Southern Province in
1994.
North
Western Province's Yasasiri Ajith was selected as the best performer
in the track and field events in the men's category for his performance
in the 400 metres hurdles while Southern Province's Sujani Buddhika
was selected as the best performer in the women's category for her
effort in the 200 metres final. |
