Ex-IGP
sees ‘hora’ police
By Chris Kamalendran
Explanations have been sought from two policemen
and an officer who were involved in trying to check former IGP Indra
de Silva for a traffic offence in the Kirillawala area after the
ex-IGP complained that one of the constables was trying to falsely
implicate him in a traffic offence.
SP
Traffic Kelaniya Division V. Sundaralingam told The Sunday Times
that explanations have been sought from the three men after they
were found to be operating in the Kirillawala area when they had
been assigned to carry out checks in the Kadawata area. The former
IGP told The Sunday Times he was driving back home to Colombo from
Attanagalla when a lone policeman had halted his vehicle and demanded
to see his licence.
"While
producing my licence I asked him what my offence was. He replied
I had committed an offence relating to the passing of a level crossing,
but when I told him there was no level crossing close by he told
me it was a yellow line crossing. I asked him whether it was a pedestrian
crossing but pointed out there was no pedestrian crossing either.
“Thereafter
he told me I had obstructed a VIP vehicle movement, which was also
not correct", Mr. de Silva said. Mr. de Silva had thereafter
inquired as to who had assigned him there and he had pointed out
a sergeant who was there along with another constable.
"I
got off my vehicle and walked up to them and when they recognised
me they saluted me. I found out that they were operating in an area
outside their assigned area," he said.
"I
am sure they were trying earning something extra by operating in
a different area. They pleaded with me not to make a complaint,
but I told them you may be doing the same thing to others as well
and accordingly made the complaint", he said. SP Sundaralingam
said that after their explanation is received an inquiry will be
made. |
