LTTE tells TNA to fight Karuna in East
The LTTE has directed the Tamil National Alliance to launch an all-out campaign to prevent the breakaway Karuna group from gaining political recognition and public support in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts.

The LTTE's Batticaloa-Ampara Military leader Bhanu on Thursday summoned the TNA MPs representing the two districts and gave directions about the anti-Karuna campaign. They were told to address seminars at the Eastern University and the College of Education and address a public rally in Batticaloa on the same day.

The TNA members were told to promote the line that LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran is the sole leader of the Tamil people and to highlight the danger in any demerger of the northern and eastern provinces.

The directive came amidst moves by Karuna loyalists to register their political party with the help of the now defunct - Eelam National Democratic Liberation Front (ENDLF). Former party financier Ram Rajan, now based in London, has reportedly been approached to help register the political party, making use of the ENDLF registration.

Mr. Rajan who currently operates a broadcasting service known as the Tamil Broadcasting Corporation is known to give publicity to the Karuna group. The LTTE has directed the TNA members to prevent the spread of 'regionalism' promoted by the Karuna group under which the dissident faction is calling for the demerger.

On Tuesday Karuna group loyalist and former parliamentarian Kingsley Rasanayagam was gunned down allegedly by the LTTE after he was found to be promoting the Karuna group. The Sunday Times learns that the LTTE had monitored his telephone calls taken to Colombo and also had felt suspicious about his newly acquired car and paying up a large amount of debts.

Mr. Rasanayagam who was elected to Parliament gaining 33,000 preferential votes from the Batticaloa district was directed by the LTTE to step down before taking oaths. He was not allowed to meet LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran soon after the elections, though the other 21 TNA MPs met him.
