Kingswood
Union responds
Responding to last week's caption of the photograph of the 'Kingswood
Union Centenary gathering' published in The Sunday Times, Joint
Secretary of the Kingswood College Union M.A. Saleemdeen states:
I
wish to inform you, on behalf of the Programme Committee, that the
students were not instructed to be present at 11.00 am as your paper
has erroneously reported. The guests and the students were requested
to be in their allocated places by 1.30 pm, as the programme was
to commence at 2.00 pm. It commenced on time with the opening of
the Swimming Pool by Post and Telecommunication Minister D.M.Jayaratne
and Central Province Governor Monty Gopallawa. The Cultural Programme
was to begin by 2.30 pm and was to continue till 4.30 pm. The President
was scheduled to arrive at 4.15 pm. She arrived 45 minutes late
at 5.00 pm.
It
should also be mentioned that the Presidential Security Division
co-operated with the Organising Committee without any fuss, allowing
any person who wished to go out from the hall, and if he or she
wished to come back, that person was taken in following the routine
security check.
Our
reporter says: Students had arrived around 11.00 a.m. because they
had been asked to be present at that time by whoever, and after
they had entered the hall were not allowed to leave. The President's
Office had informed journalists that the President's arrival time
was 2.00 pm. Some of the old boys were seen leaving due to the delay. |
