Thomians
sink Royal to take Hayman trophy
S. Thomas - 6, Royal - 3
By Mahangu Weerasinghe
S. Thomas' continued its dominance of the water sports
arena Friday when they beats rivals Royal College 6 - 3 in the 1st
Leg of the Annual Royal Thomian Water Polo Encounter for the prestigious
R. L Hayman Trophy.
The
Thomians scored off the first attack courtesy of Vice Captain Dilshan
Fernando, and proceeded to dominate ball possession from then on.
Although Royal made a comeback via Damith Roziro to level the score
in the same quarter, successive goals by Dilan Perera and Dilshan
Fernando in the second put the Thomians in the lead once more.
Although
Supun Kulathilaka put Royal into contention once again via a penalty
goal, Thomian skipper Lasitha Perera promptly increased this lead
once more by scoring again.
The
third quarter saw another goal from the Thomian skipper increasing
the Thomian lead to three. Youngster Shiven Wijeratnam nailed the
coffin shut for Royal by scoring again in the fourth quarter and
taking the Thomian total on to six. Although Damith Roziro made
a brave comeback for Royal with a goal in the same quarter, the
Thomian lead proved too wide for Royal to bridge.
S.
Thomas' goes in to second leg poised for another convincing win.
Royal on the other hand are under immense pressure to perform as
they haven't won a single match in the encounter's decade long history.
They will need to win by a four-goal margin in the second leg in
order to clinch this year's title. The second leg will be held on
the 29th of October at the S. Thomas' College Pool. |
