Pradeshiya
sabha in successful op. garbage
By S. Seneviratne
In a move to tackle the garbage problem the Udunuwara
Pradeshiya sabha has begun a programme of recycling refuse into
compost, without tapping international agencies or the private sector
for financial assistance.
Pradeshiya
sabha chairman Dudley Amerasinghe said they collected about three
to four tons of garbage and the disposal of it cost about Rs. 100,000
daily. After the pilot project was launched they not only save money
but also make a profit from the garbage. He said they now use local
raw material and equipment valued at about Rs. two million to recycle
garbage into compost.
Ajantha
Perera, well known environmentalist and a pioneer of recycling is
an advisor to this project. She says this is a model project and
invites those who are interested to come and see how successful
it is. She hopes the project would be introduced to more areas.
She also makes a plea to the public not to throw plastic bags into
the garbage as it complicates the recycling process.
The
UNP chairman while inviting anybody to come and have a look at the
project's success said that Ms Perera had not only helped to solve
the garbage problem in the area but also helped the pradeshiya sabha
saving Rs. 100,000 daily on disposing garbage.
He
said that opposition members in the pradeshiya sabha had been supportive
of the recycling programme. The project's works superintendent W.W.
Piyadasa said the compost that is produced is sold at Rs. 15 a kilo.
He said the project was only 10 months old and they hoped to make
improvements with time. |
