A
play that promises self-discovery
By Smriti Daniel
"In this play you can see
a reflection of your own life. It involves relationships between
father and son, husband and wife, brother and sister, mother and
son…" says Ashvin Gidwani, producer of Funny Thing Called
Love.
The
play to be staged on November 12 and 13 is one most families will
enjoy and more importantly will be able to relate to. Amusing and
entertaining, this play weaves together a tapestry of laughter,
sorrow, love and self-discovery.
It
tells the story of the Desai household that comprises the hen-pecked
Mr. Desai, the matriarchal Mrs. Desai and their children Anushka
and Bunty. They are a normal family and tranquil for the most part,
until challenged by the arrival of Melwyn and Dougy D'Costa.
Sparks
fly between Anushka and Melwyn. However, as the course of true love
never runs smooth, the fledging couple along with their families
must surmount the barriers of religion and caste. This play warms
the heart and inspires levity even as it explores all the nuances
of that "Funny thing called love".
Written
by the late Prof. Vasant Kanetkar, the play is peppered with "Hinglish"
(English with a smattering of Hindi). This, however, has proved
no obstacle to audiences all over Britain, where the play has won
much critical acclaim. After a hectic schedule, which had them performing
more than 66 shows in Britain and Spain, they are getting ready
to take the production on what amounts to a global tour.
The
event is organised as part of the effort to raise funds for a new
hostel building on the part of the Royal College Old Hostellers
Association (RCOHA). It will be staged on Friday, November 12 and
Saturday, November 13 at the Ladies College Hall (7 p.m. - 9 p.m.).
Tickets priced at Rs. 5,000, Rs. 2,000, Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 300 are
available at the Royal College Union office on Rajakeeya Mawatha,
