Arvind
and Sanjiv shine on day one

The Queen's Cup open Ranking Tennis Tournament 2004
was halted for nearly four hours in the morning yesterday with rain
proving a spoiler. This tournament which has been conducted for
more than 50 years is a ranked tournament by the governing body
the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA).
With
16 events taking place and all the ranked players competing for
honours, a good day's tennis can be expected today with the games
starting at 9.00 a.m.
Sanjiv
Fernando and Arvind Fernando the sons of former Davis Cup player
and National number 1 Arjun Fernando were in cracking form. Sanjiv
Fernando brushed aside Udayanga Wijesekera in straight sets 6-2,
6-1 and Arvind Fernando had an easy outing when he went past Gayan
De Silva 6-0, 6-0.
The
tournament which will continue today and then the final rounds will
be worked off on 13 and 14 November at the Gymkhana Club (Queens
Club) at Bauddaloka Mawatha. |
