Lumbini
goes down, but not without a fight

Nalanda beat Lumbini MV by seven wickets, but the
dour lads from Havelock Town did not die without a fight in their
inter-school cricket match concluded at Campbell Place yesterday.
The
Nalandians put themselves in a strong position at the end of the
first days play when they scored a formidable 246 for 6 declared
with the help of three half centuries from Sachitra Serasinghe,
Lahiru Wickramasinghe and all rounder Yasas Hewavitharana. Lumbini
in reply ended the day on 23 for 2.
Resuming
on the second day Nalandian pacies Prabath Kariyapperuma and Yasas
Hewavitharana had the Lumbini batsmen on pins to bundle them out
for 60. Prabath and Yasas shared seven wickets between them with
Sachitra Serasinghe taking two scalps. Following on Lumbini were
left with a daunting task of making another 186 runs if they were
to give the Nalandians a fight back.
They
were cruising well reaching 160 for 5 wickets at tea but spinners
Sachitra Serasinghe and Gihan Rupasinghe kept the Lumbini batsmen
on check to reduce them to 214 with the last five wickets falling
for only 54 runs. Nalanda left with a victory target of 29 to win
in 14 overs reached the score only in the 12th over and thus also
losing three wickets in the process.
