The ninth annual 'Sri Lankan Entrepreneur of the
year 2003' held last week saw an enterprising Gamini Saparamadu,
Chairman of the Kent Group of Companies, being awarded the Platinum
Award for 'Sri Lankan Entrepreneur of the Year'.
This
prestigious event was organized by the Federation of Chambers of
Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL). Both Carlo Prasanna
Thumbawila of Screenline (Pvt) Ltd and Vijitha Welikala of Watch
Guard Family won the Gold Awards for 'Sri Lankan Entrepreneur of
the Year'.
"I
dedicate this award to the people who worked beside me, my clients,
friends and people who are no more," said an emotional and
overwhelmed Saparamadu, going down memory lane. He said that he
had made it thus far because of the commitment and support shown
to him by his people.
Chairman
of the panel of judges Dr Travis Perera, a Senior Consultant at
the Postgraduate Institute of Management, speaking on the selection
process said that it was a very objective and satisfying process.
After an initial selection following a questionnaire, which dealt
with output behaviour such as investment and growth, leadership,
fulfilment of corporate social responsibility, patterns of growth,
etc, the chosen entrepreneurs underwent a focus behaviour interview.
According to Perera, a special methodology was used and the judges
"spoke less and listened more".
Chief
Guest for the event, Ann-Marie Fallenius, Minister, Charge d' Affaires
of the Embassy of Sweden said, "an entrepreneur is the agent
for change" and spoke about what makes a good entrepreneur,
citing examples from outstanding Swedish entrepreneurs.
Some
unique award winners included a nursing home, a driving school,
a filling station and a beauty salon. Patrick Amarasinghe, past
Chairman of National Chamber of Exporters, founded this awards scheme,
which recognizes successful entrepreneurs all over the country and
pays tribute to them for their contribution to the country's economy.
The
grand sponsor for the awards ceremony was Union Assurance Ltd and
the main sponsor was People's Leasing Company Limited. |
