Little
Friends at the Zoo
By Natasha Fernandopulle
In order to commemorate World Animal
Day, which was on October 4, 2004, the Little Friends of Bishop’s
College organised a project to help maintain the Children’s
Corner at the Dehiwala Zoo.
Judges
from the Girl Guides Headquarters came to judge the work already
done by the children on November 10, 2004, at the zoo. The proceedings
started with Tony the Chimpanzee lighting the oil lamp followed
by a few speeches. The Principal of Bishop’s College, unveiled
a signboard on this day, as well.
The
children were divided into six groups, namely wild animals, reptiles,
birds, insects, tamed animals and aquatic animals. The idea behind
this was to encourage the children to learn more about animals and
to be enthusiastic in what they were doing. It was a colourful event
where the children dressed in costumes suitable for their respective
groups. They performed skits, recited poems and gave small speeches
about the animals in their respective groups. This was very informative.
It
all started when an All Island competition was held for the Little
Friends. After obtaining permission from Brigadier H.A.N.T. Perera,
Director, Zoological Gardens, the children started maintaining the
Children’s Corner at the zoo.
They
raised funds by selling ice cream and ceramics. With the funds collected
by selling these products, they helped out in the colour washing,
renovating etc of the Children’s Corner. According to Brigadier
Perera, Bishop’s College is the first school to have come
to the assistance of the zoo.
The
children proudly said that the chimpanzee originally had a cage
with the bars painted in black but the Little Friends painted them
in silver so it would look brighter.
It
was mentioned by Visaka Thillekaratne, Project Chairperson, for
the Animal Day Project, that, “a child who is a friend to
animals is humane to all” and these children have certainly
learned a lot through the work they have done but most importantly
they have learned to love and care for animals, which was the whole
idea behind their project. |
